Please Don’t Keep It To Yourself

I recently asked some friends, “please speak to everyone like you’re presenting a commencement address.” That is to say; they need your inspiration. What inspires like good news? We are being bombarded with opinions that pass for newscasts, a lot of mostly clickbait, really. Or we get “breaking news,” in bright red text or enlarged chyrons scrolling at accelerated speeds.

Each of us has some measure of good news. There is power in your own report. Are you telling your stories? They can be used to subvert the effects of listlessness that come from overdosing on bad news (often, rancid opinions).

We cannot win in isolation. I am not too proud to enjoy your boast. Please, you can take the credit, but we all have a place in the cosmic celebration.

The bad news is real, and the good news is more real. We hate mass shootings, and we are all disturbed by something. Brittney Griner is still imprisoned in Russia. It appears that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade. The GOP continues its voter suppression campaign. Refugees’ lives are breaking.

If we don’t inspire each other, who will?
