The Only Way to not be a White Supremacist

Carter G. Woodson introduced Black Studies to universities and other schools, and eventually, Negro History Week, which became Black History Month. Sometimes it’s called African American Heritage Month. Woodson’s stature remains intact, and his legend grows. I am one who appreciates his work.

Nevertheless, the reasons he was driven to this work should be over and done with. Over a century has passed, and curricula continue to excise and to hide from the history of this country.

That Black History Month exists reveals how resolute the United States is on remaining a white supremacist country. White supremacy becomes more aggressive when threatened, and so it restricts voting rights, among other pernicious actions. When a person sighs in relief that “At least I’m not a white supremacist,” it means nothing when the culture is precisely that.

The only way to not be a white supremacist is to be an anti-racist. The only way for a business to not be white supremacist, the only way a public official, the only way a neighborhood, the only way a church or synagogue, the only way a school or university, the only way for a child to not be white supremacist is to be anti-racist. If you attend, work for, or study at a white supremacist entity you don’t have to go along to get along. Don’t be complicit.

The Spirit will comfort you if you are courageous enough to challenge, and possibly move, or leave, the crowd. The Spirit promises she will be with you when you take action.

Your action is the equivalent of repentance and a transformative new birth to join the true company of the redeemed.
