Maybe They Need You To Step Back

There such a disconnect when we expect things from people but are unwilling to touch them. When we say, perhaps when we think, “Why don’t they try harder?” “Why don’t they get better grades?” “Why don’t they lose weight?” “Why don’t they get a job?” When we come short of accepting who they are and we fail to contribute in ways they can welcome, they move away.

It’s not so far removed from, “Why don’t they speak English?” “Why do they kill one another?” “Why don’t they come legally?”

“They” are you.

And you already know that folks can be physically present while emotionally slipping away. Their drift is manifest, and it seems everyone can see it except you because you’re thinking about what should be without considering that what is might very well be what should be.

Is it sinking in?

It’s not so hard to rethink things, especially considering the peace you’ll enjoy and, further, you might see the door open for a reunion.

May we always revere the holiness of silence.
