We Are Not Commodities

We live in a society that is coming to terms with reality. We are communities, not commodities.

We are becoming less tolerant of being tools for the uber-wealthy men who would not be so rich if they did not hold us down with oppressive rent, inadequate healthcare, credit card interest, and wages that don’t allow us to live.

We are becoming less tolerant of those same men controlling the economic destinies of women, depriving them of the right to an abortion, all to perpetuate feudalism.

To Christian Nationalists, it is crucial to promote a specific kind of “family values.” Women, however, know that they can only survive if they live in communal families. It’s true for men’s survival, too, but we are a bit behind in appreciating that we don’t have to kill ourselves so we can singlehandedly provide for a single-family unit.

Global economies show us that we can win together. This is why people are unionizing. It’s why we fight for universal healthcare. It’s why we want a shorter work week.

The reason social media companies don’t provide customer service is that, to them, we are not customers. We are the product to them. We are commodities. We only matter to them in the way that your mango smoothie matters to you. You will enjoy consuming the smoothie, but it won’t last. In a few days, you’ll get another. This is how we all look to our billionaire overlords.

We need deep work as a society to recognize that we can look at ourselves through our own eyes and see that we are not something to be consumed.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
