We Are Breaking This Impasse (Part 1)

We are accessing the wisdom of young people. Traditionally, wisdom is seen as the purview of the aged, but time has accelerated. We must not wait until elders pass on before trusting their progeny. They are heirs of a world that they can navigate more efficiently than seniors.

Young people are conscious of the threat of climate change. Youth are more aware of global social and economic inequities.

Worldwide, youth are in touch with each other. It’s harder to trick people who communicate beyond silos.

We can speculate as to why people are not sending RSVPs, why they are not showing up for work, and why they are unionizing and striking, but young people know. They are disturbed by persistent white supremacy. They are fed up with religious domination and control.

They feel the surfeit of gun violence and are ready for a different approach.

Not only are they unoffended by the prospect of reparations for descendants of enslaved persons and unafraid to negotiate a land-back plan for Indigenous nations, many young adults long to see such change.

Older people are not obsolete, but if they dig in and obdurately hold positions of power rather than taking the role of advisors, they contribute to our demise.

Because we enlist younger folks, or rather, allow them to enlist their seniors, we will break through. They are not just ready for change. They will accept nothing else.
