Love Our American Refugees
United States ≠ America
Let us never, ever forget that America is much more than a single country. Some of our American family dwell in some of the most dangerous places in the world. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is mandated to “aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people and assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country.” Yet hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing to countries that are not much wealthier than their own. A large percentage of those fleeing their homes are children. LGBTQ+ asylum seekers reported having suffered sexual and gender-based violence in their home countries.
Salvadorans, Guatemalans, and Hondurans are pouring into Costa Rica and Panama. Some would like the U.S.A., a significant part of America, to welcome them because the resources and opportunities are greater. The pandemic in Central America worsens poverty, but this is true in Central Europe, too, where Ukrainians are fleeing.
The United States has agreed to take in 100,000 Ukrainians, but tiny countries like Moldova receive more people. If they can do it, the U.S.A. can do it. It would be monumental for this country to take in 100,000 Honduran refugees, and they are Americans. More importantly, they are people whose troubles are primarily the result of U.S.A. interventions.
The superpower has typically denied the rights of the masses while destabilizing their countries.
