Who Approves of You?

Being constantly judged and never measuring up take a toll on the soul. Your overall well-being depends largely on the support system in your life. We know this is true for addicts, but not only.

Something special happens when we live in community with a small group of friends, or as Jesus says, “Where two or more are gathered.” I know what it’s like to feel like I’m auditioning to be myself because myself is either misunderstood or rejected by some people. When we find ourselves in the life-giving environment of those who already approve of us, it reflects their wellness.

Someone has said that a friend is someone who praises you behind your back and criticizes you to your face. You can better accept criticism from someone you know who approves of you. Remember those friends. Support those friends. Invest in those friends. Prize those friends.

Still, it is ever more important that you approve of yourself. You might need to say it out loud. Self-approval may take some practice.

Regularly.
