Cosmic Love

When I listen to Stevie Wonder's music, I feel cosmic love. Within his romantic songs, there is a spirit that goes far, far, beyond the adoration for a lover.

In "As," the dimensions of love are precise.

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky (Always)

Until the ocean covers every mountain high (Always)

Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea (Always)

Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

Is he envisioning a woman? Or is he expressing a passion for everything? In another song, "Saturn," his hopes for Creation are explicit. Seems he had Putin in mind, too.

We have come here many times before

To find your strategy to peace is war

Killing helpless men, women and children

That don't even know what they are dying for

We can't trust you when you take a stand

With a cold expression on your face

Saying give us what we want or we'll destroy

I'm...

Going back to Saturn where the rings all glow

Rainbow, moonbeams and orange snow

On Saturn

People live to be two hundred and five

Going back to Saturn where the people smile

Don't need cars 'cause we've learn to fly

On Saturn

Such a longing for perfect love.

Among other things, Stevie Wonder's songs suggest that all loves, including romantic, are microcosms of the Universe's transcendent principle. The fulness of love that you have, for whomever it is, your partner, your child, your parent, your dog… is the measure of your love for all. In other words, if you don't love everybody, it is manifest in your personal relations. At the heart of betrayal, negligence, violence, and bigotry is the failure to appreciate the wonder of us all.
